Freestyle TaeKwonDo & Self Defence Systems

Phoenix School Of Martial Arts offers training in martial arts to kids, adults and full family members in their upscale dojang in Southampton.

About Phoenix School Of Martial Arts

Although Phoenix School of Martial Arts was founded in 2012, the club itself was originally opened by Master Marshall in 2007 under another organisation (International TaeKwonDo Alliance (ITA), now known as Tiger Rock Martial Arts). However in 2008, the club became part of the Cobra Martial Arts Association and was over seen by other former ITA members for nearly 4 years. Within that time, Master Marshall expanded his knowledge of martial arts by seeking out other methods of training and had the opportunity to network of other styles of TaeKwonDo as well as other disciplines of Martial Arts. And so, in 2012 he founded Phoenix SMA and since then, it has expanded significantly and now has over 300 members and over 30 of which are part of the Instructors Team.

Boost you confidence and stamina

Helping you learn Martial Arts for fun and fitness, you can find the system that suits your lifestyle best. Phoenix SMA has two Martial Arts Programmes on offer:

Freestyle TaeKwonDo (TKD)

Including 4 training areas (Forms/Patterns, Sparring, Basic Self Defence & Board Breaking) our Freestyle TaeKwonDo Curriculum gives students a progressive and structured training programme. Formal Gradings are held up to 6 times a year, giving students plenty of opportunity to progress. There are a total of 10 Colour Belts all signified with a different belt and a total of 9 Degrees of Black Belt.

We also have a Junior Ranking System that breaks the Colour Belt Syllabus into smaller sections allowing younger children to progress regularly but not jump through the Grades and become overwhelmed with advanced technique at a young age. These are known as Level Grades and have proven to be a very successful system with our Junior Students. This system also gives children short term goals to aim for whilst still progressing and prevents having to wait to Grade for higher ranks such as Black Belt due to being too young. Click here to see you Junior Ranking System Chart.

Older children (Youth) & adults progress through our regular Ranking System. An average student can achieve 1st Degree Black Belt in around 4 to 5 years. Click here to see our Youth & Adult Ranking System Chart.

Freestyle TKD is open to ages 3 and above.

Self Defence Systems (SDS)

This programme incorporates kicking, striking & blocking techniques, joint manipulation, throws & take-downs as well as sweeps, positional escapes, joint locks and chokes in one single system. Containing 4 levels signified by different colour belts (White, Yellow, Orange & Red), students will spend an average minimum time of 1 year at each level before achieving a Black Belt. Once 1st Dan is achieved, National Time Served applies to each Dan Grade.

Unlike the TKD Programme, the SDS doesn't use a traditional/formal grading event. Ongoing assessments are conducted within classes and after a student has spent the required time at each belt and the instructor is satisfied with their performance of required techniques, the student is awarded their next belt. This is known a Progressive Grading.

PLEASE NOTE: The SDS programmes are only open to ages 11 and above. Furthermore, anyone under the age of 16 will need to go through a pre-assessment before being able to attend.
