We take great care in who is teaching classes. To make sure that a candidate is eligible for the job, they will go through our Instructors Training Programme. Below is a list of the primary Instructors at our centres. These Instructors will help along your journey and answers any questions you may have. There are other members of the Instructors Team not listed here so keep an eye out for anyone with Instructors striping on their uniform as they are always happy to help too!

Master Matt Marshall

Master Matt Marshall

Our Head Instructor and also founder of Phoenix SMA. Master Marshall has been involved in martial arts for nearly 20 years. He is currently a 5th Degree Master Black Belt in Freestyle TaeKwonDo and 2nd Dan Black Belt in Self Defence Systems. As well as leading all classes at Hamble, Botley and Bishops Waltham, Master Marshall also runs the After School Club Programmes in a number of schools across the Hampshire County.

Mr James Godwin

Mr James Godwin

After training in Aikido, Karate & Judo in his teens and early 20's, Mr Godwin found his passion in TaeKwonDo after finishing university. In 2006 he achieved 1st Degree Black under Mr Marshall and began teaching as a Trainee Instructor. After achieving his 2nd Degree, Mr Godwin took a break from martial arts to start a family but returned to classes in 2012. Mr Godwin is currently a 4th Degree Black Belt in Freestyle TaeKwonDo and Orange Belt in Self Defence Systems as well as the Senior Instructor and Licensee at Locks Heath.
Mr Shaun Biddulph

Mr Shaun Biddulph

Second in command at our Hamble Centre, Mr Biddulph was Master Marshall's first student to achieve Certified Instructor. He is currently a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Freestyle TaeKwonDo and a 2nd Dan Black Belt in Self Defence Systems. Mr Biddulph is also a full time Fitness Instructor and uses his knowledge of martial arts in his sessions. In 2015 Mr Biddulph took over the Self Defence courses at King Edward VI School and is now running further course at local secondary schools, as well as adding Self Defence sessions to his own business, onelife.
Miss Roz Young

Miss Roz Young

Miss Young was enlisted into the Instructors Programme by Mr Marshall for her continually offering her assistance in classes despite not being officially part of the Instructors Team. Miss Young is currently a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Freestyle TaeKwonDo and a Certified Instructor.
Mr Samuel Dyer

Mr Samuel Dyer

Mr Dyer started his training in 2010. After 3 years he achieved the rank of Junior 1st Degree Black Belt at the age of 15. Whilst studying Sports Coaching in college, Mr Dyer also chose to become Phoenix SMA's first Apprentice. After 2 years of training Mr Dyer passed all requirements becoming a Certified Instructor, and now Runs classes alongside Master Marshall at Hamble and shares the Licensee duties at Locks Heath with Mr Godwin. He is currently a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Freestyle TaeKwonDo and a 1st Dan Black Belt Belt in Self Defence Systems. 

Mr Lewis Frost

Mr Frost has been training with Master Marshall since 2009. From the beginning he has been a keen competitor and has achieved multiple awards including Champion of the Year 3 years running and was undefeated in 2015. Mr Frost is currently a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Freestyle TaeKwonDo and a Red Belt in Self Defence Systems. Between the summer of 2016 and 2017, Mr Frost decided to become Master Marshall's second Apprentice. He now continues to volunteer each week alongside his main job.

Upcoming Instructor Courses

There are 2 parts to our Instructors Courses PSMA Instructors Course & MAIUK Course. PSMA Courses are exclusively for Phoenix SMA Instructors and relevant associated clubs. 

MAIUK is open to all martial arts style unless stated otherwise.

Martial Arts Instructor UK (MAIUK)

The Phoenix SMA Instructors Programme also includes the requirements laid down by the MAUIK Programme. In order for Certified Instructors to run classes without supervision, they must also fulfil the MAIUK requirements as well as those set out by Phoenix SMA.
